If you’re moving motorsport vehicles or racing equipment between GB and the EU, you will need the right customs documents to avoid penalties or delays at the port.
In this article, leading expert on customs, Dan Balshaw, takes us through what is required, and how the process can be simplified.
What do you need?
The exact requirements will vary depending on what is being transported and where you are travelling to. You may need the following documents:
- Import document
- Export document
- Safety & security declaration
- Goods movement reference
- Transit documents
These are the services we supply to our motorsport industry customers (including household-name race car builders and teams) on a weekly basis.
ATA Carnets
An ATA Carnet is essentially a "passport for goods," which makes life so much easier for motorsport teams needing to move vehicles and equipment across borders.
Instead of getting bogged down with separate import and export paperwork every time you travel, an ATA Carnet lets you use one unified document for temporary movements between countries in the ATA Carnet System. It’s valid for 12 months, so you can focus on your team’s performance instead of customs admin.

Safety & Security declarations
An Entry Summary Declaration (ENS) provides border authorities with the information they need to assess the level of risk posed to their territory by different imports.
An EU ENS is a mandatory requirement for EU imports coming from GB. It is key to remaining customs compliant, and is vital for seamlessly transporting goods from GB to the EU.
If you move vehicles or equipment for racing teams, you will need a GB ENS from January 31st 2025. Find out more about S&S GB here.
