In 2022 alone, £94.5 billion (€109.8 billion) worth of goods were traded between the UK and France.

These trade routes are among the most convenient for transporting goods between the UK and mainland Europe. But with additional customs requirements in recent years, these convenient routes have come with complications.

For businesses across Europe, understanding what customs documentation is actually required for transporting your goods is key to adhering to current regulations and preventing your goods from being stuck at port.

Are you transporting goods between France and GB?

These are the customs documents you’ll need.

Exporting from GB to FR

The precise documentation you may require will depend on the nature of the goods you are transporting. For example, empty vehicles may require less documentation than livestock transport.

When exporting goods from GB into France, you may need:

  • An export declaration (export from GB),
  • an import declaration (import into FR),
  • SI BREXIT,
  • GMR,
  • and an ENS.

However, if your vehicle is empty then you may only need an EXS and a Port Pass.

A transit may also be required if you are clearing in the country or transiting through France.

Importing into GB from FR

As with exporting from GB into France, the exact documents you require will depend on the goods you are transporting.

Depending on what you are moving, you will likely need:

  • An export declaration (export from FR),
  • an import declaration (import into GB),
  • SI BREXIT,
  • GMR,
  • and an ENS (or S&S GB from 2024)

On the other hand, if your vehicle is empty then you may only need a GMR Port Pass.
