Recently, the UK Government has announced that a new provisional anti-dumping duty will be introduced as of the 28th of May 2022, meaning that importers for aluminium extrusions from China will need to provide HMRC with a Bank guarantee while the duty applies.
Here’s what businesses need to know.
Why are these changes happening?
In light of multiple complaints from domestic UK aluminium extrusion producers that Chinese exporters are undercutting their business, the TRA (UK Trade Remedies Authority) conducted an investigation into Chinese aluminium importer practices.
After carrying out their own investigations, the TRA have recommended additional import duties of up to 29% for certain Chinese importers.
This means that as of Saturday the 28th of May 2022, extruded aluminium imported to the UK from China could become significantly more expensive.
What changes are being implemented, and how will they impact businesses?
From the 28th of May, the following changes will occur:
- Any goods which fall within certain commodity codes will be subject to a provisional tariff which will be covered by the Bank guarantee and will not be payable during the period of provisional remedy.
- Imports from Chinese companies that have cooperated with the TRA (Trade Remedies Authority) investigation will carry duty rates between 9.5% and 22.35%.
- Imports from Chinese companies that have not cooperated with the TRA will be subject to a duty rate of 128.17%.
This guaranteed amount only becomes payable if any definitive measures are imposed.
